Clear the Teams App Cache

This article describes steps users can take if Teams is showing incorrect information, such as wrong phone numbers, office numbers, etc, or throwing random errors while accessing files, and other strange behavior in Teams.

Information

The Teams App Cache is stored in the Appdata > Roaming > Microsoft > Teams folder for a user’s profile. This issue is user-based, not machine-based, so if a computer is used by multiple users, some may experience this issue while others do not.

The Teams App Cache is just a local cache of data/settings and should not affect the Teams installation. Exiting Teams, deleting everything in this directory, then restarting Teams should force this information to update from the server (if Teams is still running, not all files may delete because they are in use). The steps below provide a quick way to achieve this goal.

Instructions

Windows 10

  1. Exit Teams (in the system tray, right-click Teams and Quit)

  2. Do a search for Run and use it to navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams

For New Teams, the file path is `C:\Users\user.name\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe`. Delete this entire folder with the application closed in order to clear the cache.

  1. Select everything in this folder, and hit Delete on the keyboard, or right-click and Delete

  2. Start Teams via Windows Search, the Applications Menu, or shortcut on the desktop, and confirm the issue is resolved. Please note Teams may start more slowly than usual because it is re-creating this directory before opening.

Windows 11 Instructions

  1. Exit Teams (in the system tray, right-click Teams and Quit)

  2. Click Windows/Start image-20240503-134609.png > Settings image-20240503-134559.png

  3. Click Apps from the navigation menu on the left > Installed Apps from the main Window

  4. Scroll down to Microsoft Teams (work or school) and click the three dots menu (…) > Advanced Options

  5. Scroll down to the Reset section and click Reset
