DVD "Cannot play media" error

Some commercial DVDs simply refuse to play in VLC Player. This article describes what to do for Instructors who are attempting to play a Commercial DVD with VLC Player but get any form of "Cannot play media" error.

Workaround:

Open the DVD in Media Player Classic (MPC-HC) instead.

  1. Search for Media Player Classic and click to open it.

  2. Click File and then Open DVD/BD..., or hit Ctrl+D on your keyboard.

  3. Click the drive that represents your DVD/BD player under Devices and Drives.

  4. Your DVD should play.

If you cannot get your DVD to play, please contact the Help Desk at (417) 447-7548. Call while you have the DVD in the drive, and have your computer number handy, so we can troubleshoot remotely while the problem is happening.
