Studata (The S: Drive)

StuData is a file share for classroom use. This resource has place for "seed data" (files that instructors provide to students), as well as a place for students to turn in homework and group projects.

  • StuData is automatically mapped to S:\ on all classroom and office computers.

  • Students only have access to the courses/sections in which they are enrolled for the current semester.

  • Remote sites have a dedicated file server at each site that is replicated back to the file server in Springfield.

  • In Springfield, students/instructors can view files which are normally at the remote sites by going to the SiteData folder within their StuData folder.

  • Retention:

    • The section folders under each course -- that is, the folder for a specific class section within a specific semester -- are purged after the semester. There is no expectation of backups or recovery after the beginning of the next semester. This includes student folders within that course.

    • The CourseData folders -- that is, the folder where instructors place data that they reuse across different semesters -- are retained across semesters.

  • File permission updates can take several hours. Students added to sections may not have access to their sections until the next day.

  • The file servers are accessible on campus, but can also be accessed via remote.otc.edu

  • MacOS has occasional issues with mapping, and users may have to manually map the drive

  • When a student becomes an employee, only the student account retains access to StuData
