You may wish to change the default program to allow a file to open in the desired program, rather than having to open the desired program and then open the file from within that program. For Windows 10, the default program to open picture files will need to be set before they can be opened from email or a web browser.
Option 1:
Locate desired file. (in this case a .pdf file)
Right click the file, mouse over Open with, and click Choose another app...
Check the box that reads Always use this app to open .xxx files, and then select the software you wish to use for opening this file type in the future
Option 2:
Click the Windows Search Button and search for "Default apps" - click Default apps
Some basic default apps can be changed from here, such as email, music player, web browser.
If the option you are looking for is not listed, scroll to the bottom.
If you have a specific file type that you would like to associate with a specific program (for example, you want to open anything ending with .pdf using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC):
Click Choose default apps by file type.
Scroll down until you find the file type you want to associate with a different program.
Click the program it's currently associated with, then the program you want to open those files with instead. (For example, you want to change your PDF files so that they open with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC instead of Google Chrome. Look for .pdf, click Google Chrome, then click Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.)
If you have a program that you want to use to open a specific file type:
Click Set defaults by app.
Click the program you want to use as a default program for a file type, then click Manage.
Any file types that can be associated with this app will be listed. Click the program or "Choose a default" box next to the file extension you want to add, and select the program you want to make its default.
