Student Virtual Workstation
Student Virtual Workstation are available for students of specific departments in order to access specific resources. Your instructor should include information on what resources should be available to you if you are in a qualifying course. If you have any questions on whether you have access, you can contact your instructor or the Help Desk.
Requirements:
Windows 10 or later
MacOS 10.9 or later with the Microsoft Remote Desktop application installed from the Mac App store
Chrome OS requires the use of the “web client”
A Brief Note on Macs
Once the above app is installed, you will need to:
Select Workspace
Add a workspace
Enter in remote.otc.edu
Log in with OTC\username (replace username with your OTC username)
You’re done and can now proceed.
Getting Connected
Go to remote.otc.edu in a preferred browser (Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Chrome).
If you have difficulties connecting through this URL, try: https://remote.otc.edu/RDWeb/webclient/
Enter your domain\OTC user name and OTC password.
(For the domain just add OTC\ before your user name. Example John Doe = OTC\doej)
Note: If you are both a student and an employee and you want to be able to access student resources, such as the S: drive, log in with your student credentials rather than your employee credentials.
After login, you will come to the Work Resources dashboard. Here you will have access to work resources like the R:Drive, H:Drive, and Remote Desktop Connection. After clicking on any of the applications, it will launch the Remote Desktop client and you will need to authenticate again, use the same user name format (OTC\doej).
Sign out when complete.
Connecting to the Student Virtual Workstation from a Windows computer
If you have the permissions to do so, you can use the Student Virtual Workstation to connect to a machine from the workstation pool.
Click on Student Virtual Workstation.
Click OK
NOTE: Your browser may download the .rdp file instead of opening it directly, open the .rdp file after it is downloaded.
Click Connect
Enter your OTC password, and click OK. This logs you into our network.
If you have access to multiple resources, you will be prompted to select which access you would like to use and click Continue.
When prompted, enter your password one more time to connect to the virtual workstation.
Using Remote Desktop Connection through a web browser
This method is not operating system dependent and should work in most web browsers. Some browser settings can influence how or if this works as described below:
Open a web browser and go to: https://remote.otc.edu/RDWeb/webclient/
Log in with your OTC username and password (example username: doej)
Click Student Virtual Workstaion
In the Access local resources screen, make sure Clipboard is checked so copy/paste functions as it would on your desktop. You can also check Printer if you have a local desktop printer installed or unselect it if you don't (or it'll forward virtual printers like Microsoft Print to PDF which will also be on the destination computer). Click Allow.
You'll see a box that says Connecting and launching "Student Virtual Workstation" followed by progress messages. This might take several minutes depending on your internet connection speed.
If you have access to multiple resources, you will be prompted to select which access you would like to use and click Continue.
When prompted, enter your password one more time to connect to the virtual workstation.
Troubleshooting
Error: The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop client access licenses available for this computer."
If you receive an error about client access licenses:
Delete the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing
Try again. If there is still an error, right click on the Remote Desktop Connection icon and select "Run as Administrator".
Problem: I get an access error.
If you receive an error that you do not have VDI access, you may not be in an eligible course for Student Virtual Workstation access.
Problem: No machines are available.
If you receive an error that there are no machines available in the pool, check back a bit later, or if you still get the error, contact the Help Desk. This error means that all the available machines are in use, and you either need to wait until someone else logs off, or we can add additional machines to the pool.
